Derby Man Banned From Every Tesco in City Until 2029

Magistrates widened a civil Criminal Behaviour Order after CCTV-linked offences to bar him from all city Tesco outlets, signalling a stricter use of retail exclusions to tackle repeat shoplifting.

Overview

  • Bailey Esmonde was identified on CCTV after taking two cans of cider from a Tesco Express on March 30 and was later arrested on April 1 for possession of a wrap of cocaine.
  • He pleaded guilty at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on April 2 and received a 12-month conditional discharge plus an order to pay compensation for the theft.
  • On May 14 the court extended a previous 2024 Criminal Behaviour Order so Esmonde is banned from entering any Tesco in Derby until May 13, 2029 and must leave premises when asked by staff or police.
  • Derbyshire Police publicly released his custody photograph in late May, drawing more than 2,500 social media comments that focused on an alleged resemblance to singer Ed Sheeran rather than the offences.
  • A Criminal Behaviour Order is a civil tool courts use to restrict persistent antisocial or criminal behaviour and breaches can lead to prosecution, a tactic retailers and police are increasingly using to curb repeat shoplifting.
