A deal sheet was filed before the 7pm deadline, giving the clubs until 9pm to finish the move after a permanent fee could not be agreed.
Loan terms make Szmodics unavailable to face Ipswich at Pride Park this weekend.
The switch reunites him with head coach John Eustace, under whom he scored 33 goals for Blackburn in 2023/24.
Derby’s window also brought in Dion Sanderson, Oscar Fraulo, Jaydon Banel and Derry Murkin, while Ipswich’s senior additions were Anis Mehmeti and Dan Neil.
