Overview
- The City and County of Denver activated air-conditioned cooling centers at all Parks and Recreation facilities and Denver Public Library locations for the Aug. 7–9 weekend to respond to forecasts of upper-90s to about 103°F. Denver Central Library will remain open 11 a.m.–7 p.m. and Carla Madison Recreation Center will operate 8 a.m.–8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to handle higher demand for cooled space.
- City outreach teams are deployed across neighborhoods to hand out water, share heat-safety guidance and direct people to nearby cooling sites listed on the city website or by calling 720-865-5444.
- Officials directed residents who need overnight shelter to the Department of Housing Stability for placements rather than treating cooling centers as full-time shelters.
- Advocates say the expanded hours are a useful step but press for 24/7 shelter options for unhoused people, while city leaders say a year-round cooling shelter would draw resources away from long-term housing programs.
