Denton Officer Fatally Shoots Man at Pickleball Courts After Reported Charge

• Police say 911 calls around 12:10 p.m. reported an apparently intoxicated man at the Denton Tennis and Pickleball Center in the 1100 block of Riney Road.
• Responding officers found the man atop a fence holding a metal rod and, according to police, he said they would have to kill him and threatened them.
• Officers attempted verbal de-escalation before the man climbed down and charged at them with the rod, police said.
• One officer deployed a Taser that police say was ineffective, after which another officer fired multiple shots; the man received medical aid and later died at a hospital.
• No officers or bystanders were injured, the Texas Rangers are leading the criminal investigation, Denton PD opened an internal review, the shooter is on administrative leave, and the medical examiner has not released the man’s identity.
