Dense Fog Snarls Delhi With Very Poor Air as Mumbai Logs Severe Pollution Hotspots

Forecasts indicate stronger surface winds from a western disturbance will disperse fog, improving Delhi’s air within days.

Overview

  • Delhi’s AQI ranged from 312 to 327 in the morning, with multiple stations such as Anand Vihar and Mundka in the high end of the ‘very poor’ category, and the IMD kept a yellow alert in place.
  • At least 180 flights were delayed at IGI Airport as low visibility procedures were activated, with morning visibility dropping to 450–600 metres at key observatories.
  • The Air Quality Early Warning System projects an improvement to ‘poor’ later Wednesday and ‘moderate’ on Thursday and Friday as 15–25 km/h surface winds pick up from February 5.
  • Mumbai’s overall AQI held near 280 (‘unhealthy’) with severe hotspots including Sewri West at 368, alongside hazy, unusually warm conditions with temperatures forecast up to 34°C.
  • The BMC reported water misting and road washing drives and issued over 1,200 stop-work notices at construction sites, while noting a dumped red-soil pile near the CSMIA T2 monitor likely inflated local readings.
