DEME Joint Venture Wins Contract to Install 15 MW Vestas Turbines in Japan

The award signals a move to localise Japan's offshore wind supply chain by using a Japan‑flagged installation vessel for the first 15 MW‑class turbines.

Overview

  • Japan Offshore Marine (JOM), a Tokyo joint venture between DEME and Penta‑Ocean, has secured the engineering and vessel charter contract to install 21 Vestas V236‑15 MW turbines at the Oga‑Katagami‑Akita offshore site.
  • The jack‑up installation vessel Sea Challenger will carry out the offshore works and is due to sail under the Japanese flag before operations begin, with offshore installation planned for the second half of 2027.
  • Project documents show the contract is part of the agreement between Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC and Penta‑Ocean Construction, making JOM the on‑the‑ground installer for the 315 MW farm.
  • The Vestas V236‑15 MW is a 15 MW‑class turbine that allows higher per‑turbine output and fewer foundations, which typically lowers the levelised cost of energy by cutting installation and maintenance needs.
  • The award strengthens DEME's local footprint, creates domestic installation work and asset use in Akita, and could help speed broader supply‑chain localisation as Japan scales up offshore wind deployment.
