Delta Tops 5W AI Visibility Index for Airlines and Hotels

AI recommendation engines favor reputational signals over size, redirecting bookings to brands with stronger editorial footprints.

Overview

  • 5W Research published the Airlines & Hotels AI Visibility Index on June 22–23, 2026, estimating how often five major AI engines cited 25 travel brands across more than 60 common traveler prompts.
  • Delta led the index with about a 10.5% AI citation share, followed by Marriott (~10%), Hilton (~8.5%) and United (7.5%), while American (6.5%) and Wyndham (1.6%) ranked lower than their operational scale would suggest.
  • The study ran each prompt multiple times on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to calculate citation share but notes its findings are directional estimates rather than a live audit or consumer survey.
  • 5W found editorial coverage, review sites and traveler communities such as The Points Guy, NerdWallet, Reddit r/awardtravel and FlyerTalk supply the consensus signals that lift brand visibility in AI answers and create pressure on online travel agencies.
  • If AI citation share becomes a marketing KPI, expect brands to invest more in editorial partnerships and loyalty messaging while travel platforms watch for reduced referral traffic and a tighter booking funnel.
