Delta Flight Returns to Houston After Reported Cockpit-Access Scare

Investigators are reviewing conflicting reports, with pilot audio describing an attempted cockpit access versus Delta’s assertion that no flight deck attempt occurred.

Overview

  • Delta Flight 2557 to Atlanta declared an emergency minutes after takeoff from Houston’s Hobby Airport and landed safely around 5:40 a.m. local time.
  • Houston police met the aircraft at Gate 32 and detained a man after a call reporting someone tried to breach the cockpit.
  • Pilot-to-ATC recordings capture the captain saying a passenger tried to access the cockpit and was placed in handcuffs, adding that another passenger was allegedly assaulted and should be checked by medics.
  • Delta says the customer exhibited unruly and unlawful behavior toward others, approached crew and passengers, and did not make contact with or attempt to access the flight deck; no injuries were reported.
  • The flight, carrying 85 passengers and five crew on a Boeing 717, later re-departed and arrived in Atlanta about 90 minutes late as the FAA opened an investigation.
