Deloitte Accused of Fake Citations in $1.6 Million Newfoundland Health Report

The firm says only limited references need correction after an investigation flagged fabricated sources in its government-commissioned study.

Overview

  • The Independent reported that Deloitte’s 526-page report included false citations drawn from nonexistent papers and misattributed research, with at least one referenced journal article not found.
  • Deloitte said it stands by the report’s recommendations, asserted AI did not write the report, acknowledged selective AI use to support a small number of citations, and promised revisions that it says will not alter findings.
  • The Newfoundland and Labrador report was released in May, cost just under $1.6 million paid in eight installments, and remains posted on the provincial website.
  • Provincial officials, including the new premier’s office and the Department of Health and Community Services, have not publicly addressed the citation concerns.
  • The episode follows a similar Deloitte Australia case in which AI-related references were corrected and the member firm paid a partial refund after the government posted an updated report.
