Delhi Unveils Rs 22,236-Crore Green Budget With Department-Wide Tracking

The move bets that strict cross-department tracking can convert big outlays into measurable environmental gains.

Overview

  • The Green Budget, unveiled Sunday, sets aside Rs 22,236 crore, or 21.44% of Delhi’s Rs 1,03,700 crore outlay, for pollution control and river clean-up.
  • Seventeen departments must map every expense to a green goal and report results under a new tracking mandate.
  • The Delhi Jal Board gets Rs 6,485 crore for sewage treatment and Yamuna recovery, the Transport Department Rs 4,758 crore for electric buses, and PWD Rs 3,350 crore to curb dust.
  • A dedicated Green Fund backs smaller lines such as Environment (Rs 558 crore), Irrigation and Flood Control (Rs 305 crore), Development (Rs 258 crore), Forest (Rs 181 crore), Tourism (Rs 102 crore) and Education (Rs 100 crore).
  • Media analysis says success now depends on delivery, with results measured in cleaner buses on the road, less road dust, and fewer sewage discharges into the Yamuna.
