Delhi Unveils ‘Mission 2028’ to Clean Yamuna and Double Sewage Treatment Capacity

The time-bound drive pairs major capacity upgrades with drain mapping to stop untreated sewage from reaching the river.

Overview

  • Delhi targets a rise in treatment from 814 MGD across 37 STPs to 1,500 MGD by 2028 under the plan announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
  • Capacity roadmap includes 56 MGD from upgrades by December 2027, 170 MGD from 35 decentralised STPs, and 460 MGD from large plants near major drains by December 2028.
  • All 1,799 unauthorised colonies are scheduled for sewer connections between December 2026 and December 2028, with sewer work completed in 574 of 675 JJ clusters and single-point collection arranged in 65 more.
  • Technology-led oversight features drone mapping of 22 major drains, monthly water-quality testing at 47 hotspots, drone surveys of Najafgarh and Shahdara minor drains by January 2026, and mapping of remaining drains by June 2026.
  • Industrial controls and inter-state coordination will be intensified, including CETP inspections and outreach to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, whose drains contribute about one-third to Najafgarh and roughly 40% to Shahdara pollution.
