Delhi Storms Snarl Flights as Heat Bakes Southern and Central India

IMD flags a volatile pre-monsoon spell with heat shifting toward west Rajasthan.

Overview

  • Delhi-NCR, which saw hail and heavy rain on Tuesday, logged more than 500 flight delays and five diversions as temperatures fell and air quality hit its best level of 2026.
  • Rajasthan recorded widespread rain under a western disturbance, including 68 mm at Shahpura, and maximum temperatures dipped below normal across many cities.
  • Telangana and Andhra Pradesh stayed dangerously hot, with recent peaks near 46°C in Nizamabad and Gudur and many districts still above 41°C despite brief showers.
  • IMD bulletins kept parts of Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand on alert through May 9 for thunderstorms, hail and 50–60 kmph winds that could harm crops, topple weak structures and disrupt power.
  • IMD says coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, faces hot, humid conditions under yellow alerts, while isolated heatwave conditions are likely in west Rajasthan around May 9–11 as a new western disturbance reaches the northwest by May 10–11.
