Delhi Reports 2025 Drop in Vehicle and Property Thefts, But Volumes Stay High

Officials credit expanded CCTV and ANPR tools for the drop in cases.

Overview

  • Delhi Police data show motor-vehicle thefts fell from 40,045 in 2023 to 39,976 in 2024 and to 35,014 in 2025.
  • Despite the decline, a vehicle is still stolen about every 15 minutes, or nearly 96 per day across the city.
  • Other property crimes also decreased in 2025, including 6,617 burglaries, 16,246 house thefts and 102,906 incidents in the “other theft” category.
  • Police attribute the reductions to wider use of CCTV, automated number-plate recognition, data-driven patrolling and interstate coordination, with improved recoveries and several gang busts reported.
  • The NCR remains a hotspot accounting for over 56% of the nation’s vehicle-theft cases, and motor-vehicle theft still represents nearly one-fifth of reported crimes in Delhi.
