Overview
- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which put the new rates into effect Sunday, raised the ECC to ₹2,000 for light commercial and two-axle trucks and to ₹4,000 for three-axle and heavier vehicles.
- The jump follows the Supreme Court’s March 12 ruling in the MC Mehta air-quality case that approved higher ECC rates and directed immediate enforcement.
- The charge will also rise by 5% every April, rounded to the nearest ₹10, according to the MCD order reported by multiple outlets.
- Transport groups warned of cost pass-throughs to consumers, with industry leader Rajendra Kapoor calling the move a direct blow that will lift freight rates and stoke prices.
- MCD plans a barrier-free ANPR/RFID system at all 126 entry points by October 2026 to speed collection for about 70,000 commercial vehicles entering Delhi each day.
