Delhi Police File FIR Over Fake 'Verified' Facebook Account Impersonating BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

Cyber investigators are working with Facebook to identify the operator.

Overview

  • The FIR, registered on Thursday at the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi district, follows Tiwari’s January 22 complaint about misuse of his identity.
  • The page titled 'Manoj Tiwari BJP' used his photos and videos, appeared with a blue tick, and posted misleading content presented as his views.
  • A video criticizing Supreme Court-stayed UGC regulations posted from the alleged fake account triggered Tiwari’s approach to the Mandir Marg cyber police.
  • Police cited Section 66C of the IT Act and Section 356(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the case and have initiated steps to seek the account’s takedown and obtain platform data.
  • No suspect has been identified or arrested so far, and Tiwari has suggested the account could be part of a political effort to damage his reputation.
