Delhi Police Arrest Four in Alleged Racially Abusive Assault on Two Women at Nehru Place

CCTV with victims' videos helped police identify the men after a Sunday morning attack near a Nehru Place hotel.

Overview

  • Two women, one from Assam and one from Bihar, reported that a group harassed, molested and beat them near a tea stall outside Eros Hotel in Nehru Place during Sunday morning.
  • Police received a distress call around 7 am, took the women to AIIMS for medical exams, and registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections covering hurt, outraging modesty, wrongful restraint, stalking, criminal intimidation and common intention.
  • Investigators scanned nearby CCTV, preserved clips recorded by the women, and questioned eight witnesses, which led to four suspects being identified as Md Fahad, Md Savej, Md Arif and Aman.
  • Following Monday’s initial detentions reported by several outlets, police confirmed by Tuesday that all four identified men had been arrested and were being questioned.
  • The case has drawn fresh attention to racist abuse faced by people from the Northeast in big cities, while activists alleged a delay in filing the FIR that Delhi Police deny and say they are examining.
