Delhi Police Arrest Five and Foil Extortion-Linked Firing Plot in Chhawla

Surveillance followed by interrogations exposed a cross-state pipeline that recruited shooters from Punjab and sourced arms from Haryana, triggering a wider probe

Overview

  • Police announced on Sunday that Special Cell teams arrested five suspects tied to the Kapil Sangwan (Nandu) gang and prevented a planned firing at a clinic in southwest Delhi.
  • The five arrested include three alleged sharpshooters from Amritsar — Abhishek (23), Sahil (21), and Harshdeep alias Polu (23) — and two men from Kaithal, Haryana, Karan alias Ankush (20) and Aman (23), accused of supplying weapons and logistics.
  • Investigators recovered three semi-automatic pistols, four live cartridges and three mobile phones that police say were used to communicate with gang handlers and map the operation.
  • Officials said the plot was uncovered after more than a month of technical and physical surveillance; suspects carried out reconnaissance in February and one operative, Abhishek, was first detained in March, which led to subsequent arrests.
  • Delhi Police say the arrests disrupt an extortion network run by jailed leader Kapil Sangwan and that interrogations have revealed the gang’s recruiting and supply methods, with further arrests and evidence collection expected as the probe continues.
