Delhi Pickle Unit Tragedy: Owner and Son Die After Rescue Attempt in 10-Foot Fermentation Well

Police have opened a case to determine whether hazardous gases or oxygen loss in the confined well caused the suffocations.

Overview

  • Police identified the deceased as Anil, 60, and his son Neeraj, 32, who were overcome after entering a fermentation well at a pickle unit in Rao Vihar, Nangloi.
  • A labourer first fell unconscious inside the roughly 10-foot pit, after which Anil and his sons, Neeraj and Sandeep, descended to help and also lost consciousness.
  • All four men were pulled out by the owner’s brother, Subhash, with help from local residents and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
  • Doctors declared Anil and Neeraj dead, while the labourer and Sandeep were reported under treatment and stable, according to the Outer Delhi DCP.
  • The unit operated on the ground floor of a residential building with four to five similar wells; police registered a case, are checking permissions and safety practices, and await postmortem and forensic findings, as the Delhi Fire Service said the rescue lasted about two hours.
