Delhi Metro Starts Hydrogen Shuttle Pilot in Central Vista

The two-bus pilot will test hydrogen fuel-cell transit under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Overview

  • DMRC’s service, which began Friday, runs two shuttle loops between Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth during peak office hours with a bus every 30 minutes.
  • Indian Oil has supplied two 35-seat hydrogen buses with GPS and CCTV, while DMRC handles conductors, ticketing and passenger support and IOCL provides drivers and fuel.
  • Fares are fixed at Rs 10 and Rs 15 and passengers can pay with National Common Mobility Cards, UPI or cash.
  • The route links metro stations to key Central Vista offices and landmarks such as Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan and India Gate, easing last-mile travel for government staff and visitors.
  • The rollout aligns with national hydrogen-bus trials that sanctioned vehicles and nine refuelling stations for 18–24 month tests, as experts note high fuel costs and limited refuelling remain hurdles to scale.
