Delhi LG Pushes Faster Bhalswa Cleanup and Limits on Fresh Waste

The push aims to cut the landfill burden faster by bringing in global methods with stricter source sorting.

Overview

  • Sandhu, who reviewed the Bhalswa site Monday, said progress is real but more work lies ahead as officials report more than 1.3 million tonnes of old waste still to process.
  • He told the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to adopt proven global waste technologies and use international benchmarks to speed bioremediation.
  • He ordered tighter control of new garbage reaching the dumps, which officials said is about 4,000 tonnes a day at Bhalswa.
  • Authorities were asked to enforce sorting of dry and wet trash at homes and markets by working with resident welfare and trader groups to feed cleaner material into processing.
  • With hotter days coming, he prioritized fire prevention at the dumps and directed contractors to strengthen health and safety protections for workers on site.
