Delhi Launches Rs 2,100-Crore Water and Sewer Overhaul as CM Marks One Year

Officials cast the package as proof of a delivery-focused DJB, with outcomes on river cleanup still to be independently established.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on February 18 inaugurated and laid foundation stones for Delhi Jal Board works exceeding Rs 2,100 crore at Ramlila Maidan, Todapur.
  • Key measures include boosting STP capacity at Nilothi–1 from 40 to 60 MGD and Pappankalan Phase–I from 20 to 30 MGD, replacing old pipelines at Haiderpur, and starting major water-supply upgrades in the Chandrawal WTP area.
  • Household sewer connections were launched for Begumpur, Wazirabad, Ranhola and Sant Nagar, and a 0.67 MGD capacity increase at Molarband STP was announced.
  • The Delhi government extended the DJB Amnesty Scheme till August and added commercial consumers, citing 3.52 lakh beneficiaries with roughly Rs 1,400 crore in penalties and interest waived and Rs 484 crore collected, alongside a 100% late fee surcharge waiver for commercial and non-domestic users.
  • In its one-year report card, the government said 28 of 37 STPs have been upgraded and treatment capacity has risen, with the initiative intended to curb untreated discharge into the Yamuna, even as DPCC reporting notes clear improvements are yet to be shown.
