Delhi Launches Chandni Chowk Underground Cabling, Lays Foundation for Mandoli GIS Grid and Utility-Scale BESS

The package pairs heritage-focused cabling with new grid plus utility-scale batteries to boost reliability, with commissioning targeted by March 2027.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated work to shift about 52.5 km of overhead lines underground across 28 streets in Chandni Chowk at an estimated ₹159.75–160 crore.
  • The overhaul adds roughly 500 feeder pillars and decorative lighting, integrates with the existing network, removes redundant overhead gear, and deploys a digital twin for real-time monitoring.
  • Work will progress in phased night-time windows to limit disruption, with officials estimating around 10,000 direct beneficiaries in the precinct.
  • Foundation stones were laid for a 66/11 kV, 63 MVA GIS indoor grid at Mandoli, budgeted at about ₹55.5 crore, targeted for completion in 18 months, and projected to serve nearly 1.5 lakh consumers including key institutions.
  • Four standalone BESS sites totaling 55.5 MW/111 MWh were launched in Shivalik, Dwarka (G-5 and G-7) and Goyla Khurd, with area-wise beneficiary estimates shared by officials and commissioning targeted before March 2027 as part of a wider roadmap citing ₹436 crore in undergrounding, ₹3,000 crore in approved DTL projects, and a ₹17,000 crore three-year plan.
