Delhi Hits 2.9°C in Season’s Coldest Morning as Dense Fog Disrupts Travel, Air Quality

IMD forecasts a gradual rise in night temperatures from Friday with a feeble western disturbance approaching.

Overview

  • Safdarjung logged 2.9°C on Thursday, the city’s lowest January minimum since 2023, with Palam at 2.3°C and other stations also well below normal.
  • Dense to very dense fog cut visibility to 50–100 metres at times, forcing CAT III operations at Delhi airport and causing widespread flight delays and some rail disruptions.
  • The IMD issued a yellow alert for cold-wave conditions for Delhi on Thursday and a morning red nowcast for very dense fog across the city.
  • Air quality stayed in the very poor range, with the 24-hour AQI around 349–356 and several stations breaching the severe mark, including Nehru Nagar at 423.
  • Forecasters expect night temperatures to ease from Friday to 6–8°C and to 8–10°C by Sunday as a weak western disturbance shifts winds.
