Delhi High Court Blocks AI Impersonation and Unauthorised Use of Allu Arjun’s Persona

The interim order highlights a rising judicial focus on AI impersonation in cases over celebrity publicity rights in India.

Overview

  • Justice Tushar Rao Gedela granted an ex parte interim injunction that bars entities from using Allu Arjun’s name, image, voice or likeness without consent, including through deepfakes and voice cloning.
  • The court ordered identified links and sites to be taken down within 72 hours, told platforms to block new infringing posts once notified, and required a compliance affidavit within three working days.
  • The order recognized the actor’s dialogues, gestures, attire, signature and other traits as distinctive identifiers tied to him, and noted he holds trademark registrations protecting his name and marks.
  • The suit alleges large-scale sales of unauthorised merchandise and the spread of sexually explicit or derogatory content using his persona, as well as apps that mimic his voice for fake calls.
  • The court issued summons, set pleadings for July 14 and a further hearing for September 24, and allowed any non-infringing site that is blocked to seek clarification after giving an undertaking.
