Delhi HC Terms Rana Ayyub’s Old X Posts ‘Derogatory, Communal’ and Orders Swift Action

The ruling signals tougher court oversight of takedowns for years-old posts on X.

Overview

  • At a hearing Wednesday, the Delhi High Court called six 2013–2017 posts by Rana Ayyub “highly derogatory, inflammatory and communal” and sought replies from Ayyub, X, the IT ministry and Delhi Police by Thursday.
  • Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav told agencies to work in tandem, directed police to send the case papers to X, and, in multiple reports, pressed for action within 24 hours ahead of a Friday listing.
  • The petition by advocate Amita Sachdeva asks that X remove the posts, arguing they insult Hindu deities and figures such as V.D. Savarkar and could disturb communal harmony.
  • A Saket magistrate in January 2025 had already ordered a police case under IPC sections on promoting enmity, outraging religious feelings and public mischief, while police later told a trial court the posts were not available on X.
  • Rana Ayyub says her posts break no law and calls the complaint an attempt to silence her, as X’s grievance appeals panel earlier declined removal citing the matter as sub judice, setting up a test of how courts, police and platforms coordinate on old content.
