Delhi Enters First Cold Wave of the Season as Mercury Dips to 2.9°C in Pockets

IMD projects dense fog through early week across the north, heightening travel and health risks.

Overview

  • IMD confirmed isolated cold-wave conditions in Delhi on Sunday, with Ayanagar at 2.9°C, Palam at 3.0°C, the Ridge at 3.7°C, and Safdarjung at 4.8°C after a 4.2°C low on Saturday.
  • Yellow alerts remain in place for Sunday and Monday as dense to very dense fog reduces visibility across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of the Indo-Gangetic plains.
  • Delhi’s air quality stayed elevated, with 24-hour AQI in the very poor range on Friday–Saturday and readings in the poor range at some stations on Sunday morning, while several hotspots neared severe.
  • Travel and safety impacts continued, with hundreds of flights delayed earlier in the spell and police reporting multiple fog-related crashes that left at least four dead and about 30 injured.
  • Infrastructure strain and regional extremes deepened, as Delhi set a record winter peak power demand of 6,087 MW and Kashmir reported ice forming on parts of Dal Lake, with cold-day conditions forecast to persist.
