Overview
- IMD and RMC say the system over the southeast Bay of Bengal and equatorial Indian Ocean has deepened and is moving west-northwest, with coastal showers on January 7 building into broader rain on January 8.
- Heavy rain is forecast on January 9 in Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram, shifting north on January 10 toward Villupuram and Cuddalore.
- Isolated very heavy rain is possible on January 10 in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu, with heavy rain likely in Chennai, Puducherry and several adjoining districts.
- Strong coastal winds of 35–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are expected through January 10 over the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin Sea, and fishermen are advised not to venture out.
- Early-morning mist or shallow fog and a 2–3°C dip in minimum temperatures are expected in parts of Tamil Nadu, as authorities prepare drainage and monitor vulnerable areas, with rain easing January 11–12.
