Overview
- The India Meteorological Department says a deep depression that crossed the Odisha–West Bengal coast has moved inland and is sustaining an active monsoon phase that will keep heavy to very heavy rain coming for several days.
- IMD colour-coded warnings (red, orange, yellow) cover multiple states and the agency has issued low-to-moderate flash-flood guidance for specified districts in Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Odisha.
- Local authorities have preemptively closed schools, declared holidays and mobilised disaster teams as saturated soils and constrained drainage raise the chance of rapid runoff, urban inundation and landslides.
- Serious local impacts have already been reported, including landslides and road closures in Himachal (108 roads blocked, Chamba hardest hit), cloudburst rescues in Kulgam (J&K), and cloudburst-like flooding in parts of Raigad and Nagpur in Maharashtra.
- Forecasts project the active rainfall phase to persist into early August, increasing risks to transport, power and water services and raising the chance of further evacuations and emergency operations in vulnerable hill and low-lying areas.
