DC Studios Reveals Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot and Krypto at Annecy

The slate signals DC’s effort to expand into adult animation, anime, kids programming and to center original creators on new series

Overview

  • DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced the three projects during a joint presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
  • Absolute Batman is in development with creator Scott Snyder serving as showrunner and Nick Dragotta as a producer for an adult animated adaptation of the best-selling comic line that has sold more than six million copies.
  • Joker: Laugh Riot was greenlit as DC’s first anime, with SOLA Entertainment attached, Yasuhiro Aoki directing and Jim Krieg producing, and its official logline follows the Joker on a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find who took away his greatest adversary.
  • A kids-focused Krypto series is in development with C. H. Greenblatt executive producing and will follow the superdog on misadventures with a gang of misfit wannabes that he helps redeem.
  • None of the new series have confirmed release dates or platform homes, the announcements were presented alongside first looks for other DC animation projects, and the slate underscores a strategic push into anime and creator-led adaptations that could reshape DC’s animated output.
