DBS and Citi Settle Weekend Dollar Transfer on SWIFT Digital Ledger

The minutes-long result shows banks can move tokenized deposits outside normal banking hours, suggesting tests are shifting toward limited real-world use.

Overview

  • DBS and Citigroup converted bank deposits into tokenized representations and moved U.S. dollars between Singapore and New York on Sept. 5, with the weekend transaction settling in minutes via SWIFT’s digital ledger.
  • SWIFT’s ledger served as an orchestration layer that recorded, sequenced and validated interbank instructions while final settlement continued to occur on existing banking rails.
  • Neither bank disclosed the payment’s value, the customer involved or any applicable fees, which limits direct comparison with conventional cross-border services.
  • The transfer is part of a 17-bank SWIFT pilot that follows earlier live tests such as HSBC and Standard Chartered and does not yet include a public production timetable, pricing model or capacity commitments.
  • Always-on tokenized deposits could give corporate treasuries faster access to cash across time zones and reduce multi-day delays, but broader rollout depends on fixes to operations, reconciliation and regulatory transparency.
