Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters’ Split With Josh Freese Was a Collective, Months-Long Decision

Grohl says the lineup call followed months of talks during a 2024 break.

Overview

  • Speaking to Apple Music 1, Grohl said the band collectively phoned Freese to thank him and tell him they would “move on with a different drummer,” stressing it “didn’t happen overnight.”
  • Grohl noted the group chose not to issue a statement at the time, adding that Freese later characterized his stint by saying the Foo Fighters’ music didn’t fully resonate with him.
  • Freese first joined the band in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’ death, and he has since rejoined Nine Inch Nails and taken on other gigs, including stepping in for Weezer in Australia.
  • Ilan Rubin has replaced Freese as Foo Fighters’ drummer, effectively completing a swap with Nine Inch Nails as the two drummers returned to the other’s former role.
  • Grohl’s comments arrive as the band rolls out its 12th album, Your Favorite Toy, due April 24, alongside announced stadium dates in Europe and North America and an AustraliaNew Zealand run in late 2026 into 2027.
