DA Says Guard Acted in Self-Defense After Man Dies Inside Downtown Austin Bank

• Officers responded at 3:45 p.m. on March 11 to the PlainsCapital Bank at 201 West 5th Street and the man was pronounced dead at 4:46 p.m.
• Investigators report the man, who used a wheelchair, punched a security guard in the face and the guard struck him in return, causing a fall.
• The man later stood, gathered his belongings and his wheelchair, lay back down, and was subsequently found unresponsive by officers and medics.
• The Travis County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and determined the guard’s actions met self-defense standards, so no charges will be filed.
• APD is treating the case as Austin’s 15th homicide of 2026, has not released the man’s identity, and is seeking tips at 512-974-TIPS or through Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
