Cyclist John Edward Carr Dies After Swerving to Avoid Car in New Brighton

Police say they are seeking CCTV, dashcam and witness footage to clarify how a fleeing vehicle led to the collision.

Overview

  • Emergency services were called to Rowson Street on Friday after a cyclist swerved to avoid a car and hit a stationary van; the rider, later named as 68-year-old John Edward Carr, was taken to hospital and died of his injuries.
  • Eyewitness accounts and early reports differed on the fleeing car’s make and colour, with some describing a light-coloured Fiat 500 and others a Nissan Micra, prompting a broad public appeal for footage.
  • Merseyside Police traced and arrested a 65-year-old woman from Wallasey on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop, and she has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
  • Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, of the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, has asked people with doorbell, CCTV or dashcam recordings to come forward and said the van driver who stopped is assisting officers.
  • The victim’s family have paid tribute to Mr Carr and police have signposted support services for those affected as investigators build the evidence that will determine any further action.
