Cyclist Dies After Being Dragged in Châteauroux

Prosecutors opened a probe for violent assault using a vehicle as a weapon, punishable by up to 20 years.

Overview

  • Police and the local prosecutor say the fatal confrontation unfolded Thursday around 5 p.m. in Châteauroux, in the Indre department of central France.
  • After a verbal dispute and a minor collision, the cyclist held onto the car’s hood, was dragged for several meters, and was then deliberately thrown onto the roadside.
  • The fleeing car also hit a parked vehicle, and emergency crews reported the cyclist later died from his injuries.
  • Officers arrested a 21-year-old driver already known for recent traffic offenses and placed him in garde à vue, a period of police custody for questioning.
  • Prosecutor David Marcat said the case is not classified as road homicide because the victim was not run over, and the alleged offense carries a potential 20-year prison term.
