Cumbria Councils Announce Phased Road Closures for Spring Works

Some rural stretches lack vehicle detours, increasing local journey times.

Overview

  • Westmorland and Furness will close a short stretch of Long Lane in Stainton with Adgarley and part of the C5032 at Scales for one day this week to allow utility works, with pedestrians and dismounted cyclists still allowed through.
  • Cumberland Council has queued a set of North Cumbria closures to start next week for utility works, covering the U1190 near Armathwaite, the U1234 at Carleton, the C1031 How Street near Castle Carrock, the U1192 Broadway, and the U2160 Ling Lane in Welton.
  • One of the North Cumbria closures, on the U1234 at Carleton, has no vehicle diversion, while other sites will use signed alternative routes and keep pedestrian access open when works are active.
  • In the Southern Lake District, a rolling program from late April into June will close routes including the B5285 at Hawkshead Hill for five days, the C5024 at Rusland, Finsthwaite Lane at Backbarrow, the U5057 at High Cunsey, and the C5040 at Park View in Cartmel.
  • Barrow will see longer restrictions as Hibbert Road shuts for over two weeks for highway works and Market Street faces staged closures through late May, with resident access, pedestrian access, and emergency vehicle access maintained.
