Cuba’s Jet-Fuel Drought Halts Canadian Flights as Havana Confronts Deepening Crisis

The shortages follow new U.S. tariffs penalizing countries that supply oil to the island.

Overview

  • An FAA notice states Jet A-1 is unavailable at Havana’s José Martí and other Cuban airports from Feb. 10, with an end date currently posted as Mar. 11.
  • Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet and Sunwing have suspended service and are operating limited repatriations, while some U.S., European and Russian airlines plan fuel stops or tankering to keep routes running.
  • Cancellations are eroding tourism revenue, with resorts temporarily closing and December foreign arrivals at 1.81 million, far below the 4.7 million recorded in 2018.
  • Cuba’s health ministry has halted many scheduled surgeries, shortened hospital stays and promoted traditional remedies because of shortages.
  • Mexico has pledged support with an approximately 800-ton humanitarian shipment as Russia and China voice solidarity, and Amnesty International reports more arbitrary arrests and health risks for detainees.
