Crystal Mangum Released From N.C. Prison, Begins Supervised Reentry in Durham

Corrections officials say she will live at a friend’s home in Durham under parole reporting for up to a year.

Overview

  • Mangum, 47, left the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh at about 9:49 a.m. on Friday and was driven by corrections staff to Durham, according to agency spokesperson Brad Deen.
  • She completed a 14-to-18-year sentence stemming from her 2013 conviction for the second-degree murder of Reginald Daye, whom she fatally stabbed in 2011.
  • Under her release terms, she must report to a parole officer for approximately nine to twelve months while residing with a friend in Durham.
  • In 2024, Mangum publicly admitted on the “Let’s Talk with Kat” podcast that she fabricated the 2006 rape allegations against Duke lacrosse players David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann.
  • The 2006 case unraveled in 2007 when Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all charges and Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred for misconduct, while separate reporting notes Mangum’s prior arson conviction and that perjury charges are now barred by North Carolina’s statute of limitations.
