Crunchyroll Joins Apple TV as a $9.99 Channel With One-Week Trial

The move tests Apple’s long-stalled Channels push.

Overview

  • The new Crunchyroll channel is live in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia with in-app signup priced at $9.99 per month after a one-week trial.
  • As a channel, shows play inside the Apple TV app using Apple’s video player, with billing through an Apple ID plus offline downloads, ad-free playback and Family Sharing.
  • Early rollout checks found gaps in the catalog and language tracks, including Dragon Ball Z limited to Japanese on the channel while the Crunchyroll app offers English, and some new series that only start in the app.
  • AppleInsider reports the channel appears as a black icon next to the orange Crunchyroll app icon and maintains a separate Up Next queue from the standalone app.
  • 9to5Mac notes this is the first notable new Apple TV channel in a long time, highlighting a test of whether more services will trade full control for the convenience Apple’s system offers.
