Crocodile Kills 28-Year-Old at Puerto Vallarta Beach Near Marriott

The recovery of the victim followed the capture of the suspected crocodile, prompting officials to warn people to avoid estuaries where crocodiles live.

Overview

  • A 28-year-old man was attacked and killed by a crocodile at Marina Vallarta Beach near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jalisco state police and witnesses said.
  • A San Clemente couple, Jamie Yetter and Chris Bury, rushed to help and tried to reach the man with a life preserver and a kayak that had no oars but could not save him because the water was murky and the animal pulled him under.
  • Search-and-rescue teams recovered the man’s body the next morning and located and captured the crocodile near Boca de Tomates, officials reported.
  • Witnesses said beach signs list jellyfish, stingrays and crocodiles but that the crocodile symbol was mistaken for an iguana and that resort staff did not warn guests, while some people were reported back in the water the following morning.
  • Authorities stressed that attacks are rare in Puerto Vallarta but not unprecedented, noting a 2022 incident that injured tourists, and the case is likely to increase local warnings and scrutiny of beach signage and resort safety practices.
