Crisil Says Home-Cooked Thalis Cheaper Year on Year in August as Tomato Spike Lifts Monthly Cost

Crisil says cheaper onions, potatoes, pulses plus broilers drove the annual relief.

Overview

  • Vegetarian thali costs fell 7% year on year and non-vegetarian fell 8% in August 2025, according to Crisil’s Roti Rice Rate.
  • Average per-plate costs were Rs 29.1 for a vegetarian thali and Rs 54.6 for a non-vegetarian thali.
  • Month on month, vegetarian rose 4% and non-vegetarian 2% as tomato prices jumped 26% on a 35% drop in arrivals, while onion and potato stayed stable.
  • Year-on-year declines were led by onion down about 37%, potato down about 31%, and pulses down about 14%, with broiler prices lower by roughly 10%.
  • Rising vegetable oil prices (about +24% YoY) and LPG (+6% YoY) limited the overall decline, and Crisil expects freer imports of yellow pea and black gram to keep pulses under downward pressure.
