Crashes and 20‑Tonne Grain Spill Close Sections of A17 and A14

Recurring safety flaws at the temporary A14 northern terminus are increasing traffic pressure ahead of a planned June 29 opening.

Overview

  • A single-vehicle Ferrari crash on the A17 near Pirna and Heidenau late Sunday left the driver and front passenger seriously injured and one person trapped before being freed by rescuers.
  • A lane closure on the A17 caused by the Ferrari crash produced about four kilometres of queueing and delays of at least 30 minutes while emergency teams worked.
  • On Monday a VW overturned at the temporary A14 northern terminus near Lüderitz, injuring the 31-year-old driver and two female passengers and forcing an hour-long full closure for recovery.
  • Also on Monday a lorry collision near Welsleben spilled roughly 20 tonnes of grain across the A14 toward Dresden, leaving that direction blocked into the evening for cleanup but causing no reported injuries.
  • Police and autobahn authorities are still investigating causes for all incidents, and officials say opening the next A14 section from Lüderitz to Stendal-Süd on June 29 should reduce the current merge-and-exit hazards.
