CPW Recovers Body After Lake Pueblo Fishing Boat Capsizes

Officers used sonar with a remotely operated vehicle for hours to locate the victim in 44-degree, 40-foot water.

Overview

  • Officials said a 14-foot flat-bottom fishing boat was swamped by whitecaps near Pedro's Point, leaving two men in the water as one swam ashore.
  • A 911 call came in around 12:48 p.m., and another boater took the survivor toward the south marina where Pueblo West firefighters evaluated him and sent him to a hospital.
  • Rescue crews searched for nearly nine hours with a sonar-equipped patrol boat and an underwater remotely operated vehicle before finding the missing boater around 9:23–9:30 p.m.
  • The body was turned over to the Pueblo County Coroner, and officers also recovered a dog found beneath the capsized vessel for transfer to animal control.
  • CPW reported water about 44 degrees and roughly 40 feet deep, said lifejackets were on the boat but not worn, and urged visitors to wear them, noting this is the lake’s first recorded death this year after six last year.
