CPJ Opens Audit of Gaza Journalist Death List After 20 Names Removed

The review could change a widely cited tally and is expected to be completed in July 2026.

Overview

  • Late June, the Committee to Protect Journalists said it has launched a full review of its Gaza database after militant groups published obituaries identifying some people on the list as fighters.
  • CPJ has already removed 20 names from the Gaza casualties page, saying eight were established as Hamas or PIJ combatants and 12 were removed for reasons such as not being journalists or being found alive.
  • The organisation says it requires at least two independent sources before listing someone as a journalist and will reassess entries to exclude anyone shown to have directly participated in hostilities.
  • An internal dispute over the scope of the review became public when board member Nika Soon‑Shiong questioned the effort and then announced she was no longer on the board, a move CPJ described as the natural end of her five‑year term.
  • The audit exposes verification limits in Gaza where outside researchers have lacked access, has drawn sharp criticism from Israeli analysts and commentators, and could affect how media and international bodies use CPJ’s casualty figures.
