Cox Declares 30-Day Emergency for Crop Losses in 10 Utah Counties

The move opens federal and state aid after April freezes wiped out most fruit across key growing counties.

Overview

  • Gov. Spencer Cox signed a 30-day emergency order for crop losses in Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Iron, Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Utah and Weber counties following severe April freezes.
  • The order cites freeze events on April 3–4 and April 17–18 and opens access to relief from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food.
  • State officials report 95% to 100% losses for apricots, sweet and tart cherries, plums, peaches, pears and apples, with wheat and alfalfa also suffering production hits.
  • Utah’s agriculture department is now taking applications for low‑interest emergency loans of up to $100,000 through Nov. 15 for eligible producers in the affected counties.
  • The freezes followed a record-warm March that pushed trees to bloom early, which left fruit crops exposed to damaging frost.
