Overview
- Magistrate Ignatius Du Preez rejected the negotiated plea that would have left Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala with an effective eight‑year term and instead proposed an effective 12‑year sentence when he returned to the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.
- Matlala pleaded guilty on 25 June to fraud, corruption and money laundering over a contested SAPS Medicare24 tender worth about R228 million and has agreed to be a state witness in exchange for a reduced sentence.
- The NPA warned that if Matlala or the state rejects the court's modified sentence the plea deal will collapse, the contents of his affidavit cannot be used, and prosecutors may have to restart parts of the investigation and prosecutions.
- Matlala remains in custody and must return on 13 July for final sentencing while he also faces a separate 25‑count attempted murder case in Johannesburg set to begin on 20 July.
- The case raises two larger pressures on law enforcement: whether insider cooperation can secure convictions of senior police and political figures named in Matlala's testimony and whether illicit assets tied to the Medicare24 contract will be recovered.
