Court of Appeal Upholds 27-Year Non-Parole Term for Childcare Worker

The ruling preserves his parole date and allows separate New South Wales charges to proceed because the court found the scale of recorded abuse and psychiatric risk justified lengthy detention.

Overview

  • The Queensland Court of Appeal dismissed Ashley Paul Griffith’s challenge on Friday, June 12, 2026, leaving the 27-year non-parole period on his life sentence unchanged.
  • Griffith pleaded guilty in 2024 to more than 300 child sexual offences against dozens of young victims, with the offending said to have run from about 2007 to 2022.
  • Police raids in 2022 seized a cache of more than 4,000 child-abuse images and videos and investigators say Griffith filmed almost all his victims at childcare centres in Queensland and during travel to Italy.
  • His defence argued guilty pleas and around 18 hours of cooperation spared victims courtroom trauma, while prosecutors relied on psychiatric reports that diagnosed a paedophilic disorder and ongoing risk to children.
  • Under the upheld sentence Griffith will not be eligible to apply for parole until 2049 and the appeal outcome clears the path for separate NSW prosecutions alleging further child-sex offences.
