Coupang Warehouse Fire in Incheon Brought Under Initial Control After Three-Day Battle

A national mobilization of more than 800 firefighters and evacuation orders for nearby residents has prompted a formal post-extinguishment probe of the facility's safety systems.

Overview

  • The blaze started on the sixth floor early Saturday and forced the immediate evacuation of 121 people who were inside the eight‑storey fulfillment center.
  • Local crews escalated the response and the National Fire Agency issued a nationwide mobilization that deployed about 812 firefighters and roughly 231 pieces of equipment to the site.
  • Incheon authorities ordered residents within a 116‑meter radius to evacuate over collapse fears, moved hundreds to school shelters, and treated two firefighters for smoke inhalation or exhaustion.
  • Firefighters used aerial ladder trucks, helicopters, thermal drones, unmanned equipment and demolition of ramp areas to ventilate the building and to stop the blaze reaching a floor that stores lithium‑battery warehouse robots; rainfall helped bring the main fire under initial control on Monday after about 61 hours.
  • Coupang apologized, said it is cooperating and supporting evacuees and crews, and police have formed a team to join a post‑fire investigation that will examine sprinkler, shutter and structural performance and the broader safety of large logistics centers.
