Costco and Deschutes End Kirkland Signature Beer Line

Pulling an award-winning, low-cost lager from shelves creates uncertainty about Costco's private-label beer strategy.

Overview

  • Deschutes CEO Peter Skrbek told distributors on July 1 that production of the Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager and Vintage Ale will be wound down during July.
  • Costco will continue selling existing stock at warehouse stores while supplies last and trade reporting projects most locations will be sold out by September or October.
  • The Helles-Style Lager won a World Beer Cup silver medal in 2025 and a bronze in 2026, making the discontinuation notable for a decorated product.
  • The beers were sold cheaply compared with many craft options, about $12.99–$13.99 per 12-pack, prompting strong shopper demand and online calls to stock up.
  • The partnership helped Deschutes reverse a 2023 volume decline with a roughly 9% jump in 2024, and Skrbek said he would not be surprised if the lager returns though no firm plan has been announced.
