Costa Mesa Woman Pleads Guilty to Registering Dog to Vote

Election officials say the case shows existing ID/residency checks catch ineligible ballots.

Overview

  • Laura Lee Yourex, who pleaded guilty on April 10 to a misdemeanor for registering a nonexistent voter, will be sentenced October 16.
  • Prosecutors say she cast ballots in the name “Maya Jean Yourex” in the 2021 recall and the 2022 primary, and the 2022 ballot was rejected for lack of required ID and proof of residence.
  • The case began when Yourex told former Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates, who then alerted the Orange County Registrar and prompted a district attorney investigation.
  • Prosecutors cited posts showing the dog with an “I voted” sticker in early 2022 and a 2024 photo of a mailed ballot captioned “Maya is still getting her ballot” after the dog died.
  • Registrar Bob Page said 571 ballots were flagged for verification in the last election, with 121 cured after voters provided ID or proof of residency.
