Coroner Rules Father and 12-Year-Old Son Died Accidentally After Fall on Scotland's Bidean nam Bian

Post-mortems confirmed fatal trauma for the father with exposure the cause of the boy's death.

  • Thomas Parry, 49, and his son Richard, 12, fell on May 28, 2024 while ascending the 1,150-metre peak and were found the next evening about 100 metres apart.
  • A missing persons report was filed the following morning, Police Scotland traced their car to the Three Sisters car park, and a search began with 44 rescuers including a Coastguard helicopter and visiting Lake District teams.
  • A mountain guide told police he had advised the pair about steep ground and nearby cliffs as weather deteriorated with low cloud and rain reducing visibility to about 30 metres.
  • Rescuers found injuries consistent with a fall from height and a rucksack containing the father's driving licence, and life was declared extinct at the scene.
  • The pathologist reported head and chest trauma for Thomas with no alcohol or drugs detected, noted a medical event could not be excluded, and concluded Richard died from exposure after head and limb injuries that may have led to unconsciousness.
